Nampa singer is living the Dream

Concert: Honi Deaton and friends will perform in Caldwell

By Andrew Van Dam - For the Idaho Press-Tribune
Six years ago, Honi Deaton left Idaho to follow her husband and her dream. Now she’s coming back with her band, Honi Deaton & Dream, to bring their “high energy music from the heart” to Albertson College of Idaho’s Jewett Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Jan. 13.

After resettling in husband Jeff Deaton’s hometown of Atlanta, Ga., Honi, Jeff, and three other accomplished bluegrass and country musicians came together and formed Honi Deaton & Dream in 2002. The name comes from Honi and Jeff’s longtime “dream” to form a band together after spending most their time working apart.

In the years since its formation, the band has established itself and its spiritually-influenced bluegrass and gospel on the national scene and enjoys a high level of popularity with bluegrass aficionados across the country.

Deaton and her group look forward to returning to Idaho for the second year of what they hope becomes an annual event.

According to Deaton, the band really enjoyed last year’s visit to Idaho, the first for many of them.

“They loved it, half of them wanted to move there. They got to go fishing and they couldn’t believe how big the mountains were,” Deaton said. “Back east there’s the Blue Ridge Mountains, but they’re more like big hills compared to the mountains in Idaho.”

In the past five years the band has released three albums, the most recent of which, “Chasin’ Dreams,” was released on Jan. 9. The eighth track on Chasin’ Dreams is an instrumental tune named after Caldwell to honor the song’s birth in a jam session after the band’s first show in Idaho a year ago. As Honi remembers it, “they stayed up all night pickin’ and wrote this tune.” She says the song is “real sentimental for them (because) we had a special time back there.”

“Caldwell / Angelina The Baker” isn’t the only song on the album whose roots go back to the Gem State, “Wagons West,” a song about being proud of where you come from, was written by Deaton’s stepbrother — an Idaho resident himself.

Fans who attend a Honi Deaton & Dream show can expect “a little bit of everything.” The band, who write the majority of their own songs, will play songs from all their albums, as well as some traditional tunes and even a few songs that have not been released yet. Deaton says that, at their concert “we hope to make them laugh, maybe cry a little, think of the past, think of veterans, and think of where they came from.”

Tickets for the Jewett Auditorium show are available at the door or through American Music in Caldwell for $10 ($5 for seniors, with kids under 12 getting in free). The band will also perform a Gospel Jubilee at 4 p.m. on January 21 at the Nampa Civic Center, tickets are $5 at the door.

The band’s albums and tour dates are available at American Music in Caldwell or through their Web site, http://www.honideaton.com.
